I feel very pleased and proud to have been featured in Small City, Big Personality in their Workdays and Weekends section.
As a small, local business in Perth, I appreciate all local support and this helps achieve my aim which is to educate as many families as possible on how we can promote relaxation for improved health and wellbeing in the comfort of our own homes using physical therapy such as the powerful and wonderful therapy Reflexology.
We know physical human touch is powerful and when done correctly can have a huge impact on assisting our bodies return themselves to homeostasis, facilitating its ability to heal from stress, trauma and ailments.
In Eastern countries, most families have a designated 'masseuse/masseur' to support each members wellbeing. Investing in ourselves and our self-care in a an age of increased pressure in our daily lives could not be more important. With ever increasing feelings os anxiety and depression with many people now on anti-depressants as an almost default response from GPs as a quick fix for the symptoms, we must learn exactly why we feel the way we do. Exactly why our bodies sometimes do not produce balanced hormones, what triggers this, how STRESS affects us and what we can do physically to relieve this and physical therapy works. More so than any anti-depressant! I should know...after losing my mother tragically to cancer when my son was only 2 months old, I felt so low, my GP put me on Anti-depressants. These did nothing for me other than give me headaches, insomnia and serious night sweats making me feel even more irritable and low! I began researching the parasympathetic nervous system, shock, stress and how our bodies react on an anatomical level.
Fast forward 3 years, a career change and new qualifications later, here I am. Education is what we need, not pills!
As a new business, I truly appreciate all the support from family, friends and clients so far. Thank you and I look forward to sharing more and more informative content with you over time.
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a unique alternative therapy using Ancient Chinese Techniques which have been adapted by famous Reflexology Pioneers such as Fitzgerald and Eunice Ingham who developed the reflex zones and maps we know today. Reflexology is specific reflex and zone therapy using a variety of pressure and stroke techniques on the feet, hands and/or ears but traditionally the feet. Reflexology promotes well-being, restores balance and harmony, reducing stress whilst having positive healing benefits to particular ailments such as poor sleep, mood and others noted by individual clients. Reflexology is a non-intrusive complementary health therapy and your therapist will work holistically with you to promote better health and wellbeing.
What are the health benefits?
Apart from leaving you feeling completely relaxed, like you're walking on a cloud, clients may possibly experience positive relief from the health benefits highlighted in the above image so brilliantly designed by Karen's Reflexology in New Zealand (A fantastic source of information). It is important to say that we are still developing our sciences to prove these positive outcomes, but we know Reflexology is having such a positive effect, that it is now widely being used with Cancer, MS and Parkinson patients across the globe. What we do know is that our body can recover and heal from a variety of symptoms and illnesses when it in a highly relaxed state. We also know that STRESS is the most common cause of many health problems. So anything that helps reduce stress is surely an excellent activity that should be part of your healthcare and lifestyle.
Is reflexology suitable for me?
Reflexology is a therapy which can be received by anyone at any age, from newborn babies to those receiving end of life care, and everyone in between. However, there may occasionally be times when it is not suitable to provide a treatment. The best advice is to ask. A well trained therapist always completes a consultation form before any therapy to check contraindications. If a therapist is not doing this, you may want to seek another therapist! Suitable for those seeking regular therapy to restore health and well-being.
Will reflexology help me?
Well trained reflexologists do not claim to cure, diagnose or prescribe. Reflexology is a very individual treatment which is tailored to you as a whole person, taking into account both physical and non-physical factors that might be affecting your wellbeing. The best way to find out if you feel the deeply relaxing and healing benefits is to give it a go! Usually, after a treatment your tension may be reduced and you might feel relaxed. You might also notice yourself sleeping better and find your mood and sense of wellbeing improving. You may also find that other aspects improve too; however, every individual's healing response is different.
Reflexology should not be used as an alternative to seeking medical advice. The best Reflexologists are affilated with a well known association such as The Association of Reflexologists. This AoR logo and membership ensures the best training with over 100+ plus hours of practise, with additional case studies and continued dedication to their knowledge, skills and professional development.
What's the difference between Clinical Reflexology and Reflexology?
This is one of my most frequently asked questions. There are a lot of courses and many 'Reflexologists' may have only completed a 2-3 day training course. Whilst fast tracking courses can be beneficial when adding to already learned therapies, I do not recommend learning an entirely new practise in this way. A Clinical Reflexologist has had extensive practise over the course of a year, including detailed case studies with anatomy and physiology study to the highest level to ensure that treatments can be specifically tailored taking into account the current health and existing medical conditions that may be present and in need of balancing. Such knowledge and skills cannot be learnt in a short course, plus there are many who think Reflexology is just a 'posh' foot massage. Well, actually, I have experienced a 'posh' foot massage which was sold to me as Reflexology once and ever since, I realised this therapist had no idea what Reflexology actually was. So be careful when choosing your therapist! Look for the AoR badge! I am a fully registered Member of the AoR.
What should I expect to happen during a Clinical Reflexology treatment?
A full medical history will be completed with you before your first treatment, and you will be asked to sign a consent form for treatment. This information will be kept confidential and will follow GDPR guidelines which should be presented and explained to you. Reflexology is a very easy therapy to receive; depending on the type of reflexology, the most clothing that will have to be removed for a treatment to take place will be your socks and shoes, unless you specifically ask for an additional leg massage to aid circulation, but even then, only your skirt/trousers would need to be removed and you will always be modestly covered.
The therapist will then use their hands to apply pressure to the feet, lower leg, hands, ears or face, depending on the type of reflexology chosen. You may feel areas of transient discomfort during the treatment, only at certain sites where there may be some tension, but generally the experience should be relaxing. Always communicate with your therapist and let them know if any particular area feels tense/sore. This is usually an indication of a blockage that can be slowly worked on. During the treatment you may be offered relaxing music, a choice of creams/waxes or even some light aromatherapy to be diffused.
Usually at the end of the treatment, your therapist will talk to you about which areas were discovered as unbalanced and discuss if any findings match your lifestlye/presenting ailments. I complete a foot chart after the first session which we can then use a reference point for future sessions. Your therapist should also then discuss your individual aftercare plan. This contains general aftercare advise as well as specific care which could involve recommending a course of treatments.
How will I feel after a reflexology treatment?
It is useful to give feedback to the reflexologist as this may show the response of your body to treatment. This in turn might help the reflexologist to tailor a treatment plan specific to your needs. After one or two treatments your body may respond in a very noticeable way. Most people note a sense of well-being and relaxation; however, sometimes people report feeling lethargic, nauseous or tearful, but reflexologists believe that it is part of the healing process. The Healing Response is very individual and I will produce an article on this alone as a topic. However, if you experience lethargy, headaches, cold, flu like symptoms or feel more emotional than usual, this demonstrates a release of toxins and stress and the reflexology as being effective. These symptoms should only last a day or two if they exist at all and it is perfectly normal. Obviously, if symptoms worsen or persist, there could be another underlying reason and you should seek your GP for advise. The idea is that your body heals itself, balancing it back to its natural state of equilibrium and I advise continuing with treatments even if you experience a 'healing response,' because your body will adjust and the next session or sessions after this, your response will be different. Most people do not experience a healing response other than just feeling more calm, relaxed and positive generally.

Perhaps you'd really like to try a complementary therapy but maybe had what you consider to be a negative experience afterwards in the past or you've heard from somebody else that this could happen, so it's stopped you from trying again or at all.
What is a Healing Response or Healing Crisis?
After receiving a complementary therapy such a body massage, reflexology or some form of physical therapy, a person can experience the following symptoms after their treatment: headache, cold/flu, tiredness, lethargy, sickness, emotional or other.
Whilst this sounds negative, it is important to understand that these reactions are your body's way of expelling and letting go of the internal stress and tension that you may have been carrying, which is actually a sign that the treatment has been very powerful and successful in its aim. It is also important to know that these symptoms do not always occur, are rare and most importantly, no two treatments are ever the same. Just because you may have experienced some symptoms after one treatment, does not mean you will have those again or every time. Every treatment and your body's reaction depends on the state of your body internally at the time.
In fact, if you have experienced such symptoms, it is a good idea to communicate this to your therapist and to have another treatment quite soon so your body can continue healing and build up a resistance. In reflexology terms for example, we aim to boost your systems with 'happy chemicals,' to combat stress and activate your parasympathetic nervous system and by having regular treatments, especially during a time that your body may be in need of re-balancing allows you to keep these positive chemicals topped up.
I have experienced healing responses myself a few times, usually in the form of a headache, the need to sleep or to have a long cry and sometimes, as a therapist and due to the energy connection and transfer between a therapist and client, I have on occasion experienced a healing response after providing a treatment.
It's important to be aware of the energy we carry and how this effects us and others around us and if we do experience symptoms, this is a good sign! We can't get better before we let go...even if that letting go is in the form of a reaction. Finally, symptoms should only ever last a day or two. On the odd occasion if symptoms do last longer or develop, there was a previous underlying issue that the therapy has helped surface which is only ever a coincidence.
Allow your mind to believe that a reaction is a positive part of the healing process and always talk to your therapist.
Is there anything I can do to avoid this from happening?
Whilst your body will react in the way it needs to which is out of our control, there is before and aftercare advise that you can follow which should always be communicated. Such advice for BEFORE/AFTER can be the following:

10 Amazing reasons why Aromatherapy Massage is so good for you!
Aromatherapy is a fascinating alternative medicine through the careful use of essential oils, volatile plant materials, selected to aid and support ailments within your body, restoring it back to its natural equilibrium, removing waste from toxin build up, therefore unblocking systems so they can work efficiently. This promotes self healing and provides your body with the relief it needs to heal itself.
Aromatherapy massage combines two powerful and popular techniques for increased healing power, stress reduction, and pain relief. The vast array of essential oils that can be inhaled or applied topically can provide healing, soothing, and relaxing effects. You may find that aromatherapy massage provides the extra therapeutic and psychological care you need to get the most benefit from your massage session. Most common physical ailments seen to be supported through massage are to;
What can history tell us?
Massage has been practised for thousands of years. Massage was introduced to the United States almost 200 years ago and has grown in popularity in recent decades. History tells us that Aromatherapy may even be an older form of treatment, ranging back almost 6,000 years. The Ancient Egyptians, Chinese, Indians, Romans, and Greeks used aromatic oils for healing, as perfumes, and in religious ceremonies. Over the last century, scientists have demonstrated the healing qualities of many essential oils, both physically and emotionally.
When combined with massage techniques, aromatherapy can provide an additional level of relaxation and healing. Inhaled scents may work on clients’ minds and emotions to encourage relaxation and stress release. When rubbed into the skin, massage oils containing essential oils (in proper balance) can provide potent relief from pain and inflammation.
Essential oils are inhaled through the famous Olfactory system, the pathway to the centre of our brains. The brain areas responsible for scent, emotion, and memory are closely related. Experts believe certain aromas trigger positive memories and feelings and may contribute to anxiety relief. Everyone has different personal associations with various scents not to mention the medicinal benefits to use from the essential oils themselves due their healing properties. After all, we're all cells, everything around us. We look to nature for our medicines as have humans since the beginning of time. Combining the two together through a treatment that leaves you feeling revived, re-balanced and relaxed can only be beneficial.
Researchers have conducted a number of clinical studies on aromatherapy. They’ve found that essential oils have a positive effect on many people, for conditions such as treating hair loss, insomnia, agitation, constipation, pain, itching, psoriasis ro even pregnant women (who may not be able to use other forms of relief/medicine).
SAFETY NOTE: However and as with all clients, essential oils should only be used after safety selection and advice from a certified Aromatherapist due to contra-indications, which are important for the safety of every individual, but even more so for women who may pregnant as many oils are not suitable if this is the case. Always seek advice from your GP and your Aromatherapist before using essential oils in any case but particularly if you believe yourself to have an existing, compromising condition.
What to Expect from an Aromatherapy Massage Treatment?
Massage therapists often use scents in the massage space to encourage relaxation and stress release. This is subtle and primarily done through light diffusion before the treatment starts to cleanse the space and can continue to be used during the session in short bursts. During the massage itself, your therapist will have selected essential oils suited to your body's needs after consultation. These will always be blended with a wonderful carrier oil which will be mixed and then applied to your body during your massage. Essential oils will always be blended with a carrier oil when use topically on the skin.
Always make the most out of your consultation time at the beginning of your session to explain exactly how you're feeling and how you'd like the massage to help you. If you prefer not to have essentials oils applied to your body topically, always tell your therapist as inhalation can be the main method and just a light and soothing oil, full of vitamins used on your skin. The most important thing is that your aromatherapy treatment is tailored to your needs and preferences.
Aromatherapy massage has a more holistic approach to the massage and will concentrate on more relaxing strokes to aid in the removal of toxins whilst releasing happy endorphins to promote well-being and relieve stress.
Specific and most common strokes used are; Effleurage, Fanning, Feathering, Petrissage (kneading), Friction and Light Pressure
Other movements may also include Vibrating, Tapotement (percussion) Pummeling, Hacking and Cupping depending on the client's reactions to the massage, as all thresholds, needs and physical conditions are different.
